The Alliance for Financial Inclusion is a policy leadership alliance owned and led by member central banks and financial regulatory institutions with the common objective of advancing financial inclusion at the country, regional and international levels. It has 86 member institutions across 82 countries.
AFI, through its Africa Regional Office, intends to guide policymakers in the African region on ways in which they can foster the acceptance of digital payments by merchants through policy interventions. The goal is to boost consumer acceptance of digital payments in Africa to further financial inclusion and build on Africa’s existing digital financial services growth
The project involved conducting a situation analysis to better understand the current status of digital merchant payments from the demand-side, supply-side, and policy development perspectives. It also identified key policy-level challenges facing the African region in increasing the uptake of digital merchant payments.
The outcome of the project is a Special Report that includes policy recommendations to overcome the barriers and ensure an efficient enabling environment for the development of digital merchant payments.
